Effective whole school approach to spelling

Our teaching of spelling still isn't quite as effective as we would like it (results from SPaG test Y6 indicate issue with spelling, as do the 2/year spelling age tests we do).

What do other people do in their schools for spelling? How is it monitored (effectiveness, teaching strategies, impact etc)?

Does anyone have any more concrete advice than yet another off the shelf programme that we should (but don't!!) slavishly follow. Any tips? Tricks? How did you implement a whole school approach - and make sure it was delievered?!

Any advice appreciated (this is my first real "management" role, so any advice, suggestions etc would be very welcome).

I wonder if I could be rude and ask for your ideas too?

Spag tests have triggered a panic as our spelling was awful!

    Thanks if you can. X
