I have a class of year 10 students they are set 1. FFT predictions show they should be high performing but about 2/3 of them are EAL . They have been doing okay this term, most being on track when we have done assessments of short topics. They have just done an end of term exam and it is shockingly bad. It is clear most of the EAL students just haven't got the vocabulary, scientific or otherwise to access some of the questions
.This is a school wide problem as our intake has changed dramatically over the last 3 years with lots of Eastern european students arriving . They are going to appoint someone to coordinate EAL but not until the new year.
Any suggestions for resources/ strategies to help them ?

Personally I am not sure if FFT predictions are that accurate. Try some iGCSE questions on similar topics they are usually written in a style that is more accessible to EAL pupils so that could help you see if it's a problem with the language or the Science. Unfortunately because of league tables it may not be possible to teach iGCSE instead.
