Anyone recommend and free software to rip DVD's?
I like freemake.
Video or Data->ISO ?
If you look on wikipedia they will have a list of software and what OS it runs on as you didn't say.
Also usefully for Windows users, they usually give its freeware/crippleware/toolbarware status.
In this case http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_ripper
It is more important what it does - do you have copy protection on the DVD ? do you want it encoded in a particular format ?
I want it to rip a DVD so that it can be played locally on the machine so either .mpg or .avi would be fine.
In that case I would look through the wikipedia list, have a look at them, pick the one you like and use it.
Probably tbh they are mostly the same. Extract the raw video off the DVD, encode it.
I cannot help you as I run Arch Linux. It has a very nice DVD ripper but there is no Windows port (I think)
