Do I need a formal qualification to be a school assistant

Discussion in 'Teaching assistants' started by imadahmed, Mar 9, 2011.

  1. I want to help children who do not speak English as their first language.

An assistant use to help me along, and I wouldn't think she had any formal qualifications, but I never asked her and it was before 1999.

If I was to send some emails round what is the minimum experience and qualifications I would need?

Is English your second language? Very few schools would have a vacancy for an assistant just for children with EAL. However, it might be seen as an advantage if eg you spoke english as a second language and a school had children who had the same first language as you
