Anyone recommend a good GCSE dictionary?
  8. Having just looked through some German scripts, I have an end of term quiz for you. You may award yourself one mark for each sentence whose intended meaning you can work out , and a bonus point if you can guess which word the student was looking up in the dictionary (for the words in italics). 10. Gets a real pain for ppl using dictionaries - they just put words together or just look up the wrong word. I had someone in my year 8 class tell me the word for brackets when I asked for bracelet and they kept arguing with me and then he/she checked again and they looked at the wrong work.

On the theme of animals...I once asked a French kid Have you any pets? whilst teaching in Rouen. She replied, I am a hamster. When I said that this was wrong, she apologised and changed it to I am a guinea pig!

When I first started teaching, which was last century, we were looking at the verb "to be". Trying to get the students to understand this in English and how it varied I asked them to say out the verb in the present tense in English. One girl called Erica enthusiastically raised her hand and said

    I be

    You be

    She be

    He be

    We be

    They be

It was a school in Devon ......
