  1. I am a Secondary (English/Drama) trained teacher with several years experience working in a variety of different settings including Independent. For the last five years I have been bringing up my daughters and working for an online learning community as the English/Literacy and Performance expert. The learning community's aim is to reengage disengaged learners through digital multi-media and enable them to access the curriculum and gain accreditation. It's been a rewarding, enjoyable, challenging and worthwhile use of my time whilst being out of the classroom.

    Recently, I have started to think about returning to the classroom and forging plans for the future. I am interested in moving into Special Needs as, over the last few years in particular, I have had experience working intensely with online learners who have barriers to literacy. I am wondering how best I should use my time and prepare for returning. I have been thinking about trying to gain some additional skills and knowledge that may enable me to work in a position such as SENCO in the future (though I realise that it may be unlikely that I could simply 'walk into' a position like this without additional classroom experience).

    I have been considering embarking on the MA in Education (Equality and Diversity) with the Open University too. This is something I could undertake over the next few years whilst continuing my work for the online learning community (all being well with funding and the general health of the organisation of course). I spoke to the TDA today and they explained that the Return to Teaching course is no more for English and Drama specialists so I understand that this isn't an option for me.

    Do you have any advice for me about how I should prepare for and then make the move back into the classroom and into the area of Special Needs?

    I believe it's now standard practice for a SENCO to have to do the course,( even if they're actually doing the job at present), so it might be worth looking at seeing how long the course is, what it costs, does one have to have access to a school to do it etc.
    Then should a post come up and you already have completed it, it might tip the scales for interview or an actual job!

    The obvious thing to do is to start looking at job adverts for the sort of job that you want, and then see what the requirements are.
    If the posts you fancy all say that it is essential to have such-and-such a qualification, or desirable to have this-other-experience, then you start looking around at ways of getting that qualification or experience. No point in just taking a course unless you can see in job adverts that it is valued.
    By the way - don't forget exam marking as a way of getting back into the swing, and proiving to schools that you are up to date.

    As usual Theo has pointed out a very important point. Do some investigation. My post was somewhat of a 'gut reaction' to your idea of a SENCO position as I have a couple og colleagues who have currently had to undertake the training to be allowed to continue in the jobs they currently hold!
