Dear Theo: Who to put as a referee?

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by Amz_fairy, Apr 8, 2011.

  1. Hi Theo, and all!
First off, apologies for tricky formatting: I'm on a mac and the TES doesn't seem to like paragraphs on my mac!
This is my situation, at present: I qualified in 2008 and did a full year of supply before getting a temporary post for a year (which completed my Induction, fortunately). I've been back to supply since September 2010, and been on a long-term, full-time assignment since October 2010. I'll be going back after Easter, until the end of the school year. Way back in November the head offered to do me a reference for my job applications, which I was pleased about. However, since then their have been a few incidents of...school politics. The pretty stuff that abounds in most schools. I'm starting to feel uncomfortable about putting the head teacher as a referee.
I had an interview on Wednesday, didn't get the job. The interview panel actually told me that they hadn't received a reference from my current place, despite requesting one 3 times. You can see why I'm feeling uncomfortable about this! So my question is: Who would be a suitable second reference? Obviously my first will be the head at my induction school. Could my second be my NQT mentor? Consultant at the supply agency? PGCE tutor?

    Thank you very much!

Which Head is this? From the current long-term assignment?
Why not ask your KS co-ordinator or Head of Department or Deputy Head to be a referee? Supply agency must always be your last choice, and PGCE tutor is too long ago.
But someone else from your current school would be good.

  3. Yes, that's right.

I'd feel a lot more comfortable asking for a reference from the Deputy, who I feel is the most genuine member of SMT. Thank you for your advice and suggestions, Theo, very much appreciated!
