Dear Theo - What will your classroom look like?

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by Sharon75, Jun 28, 2011.

  1. Hiya,

I have just found out that I was unsuccessful at interview in a post where I was up against a subject specialist for the LA (who wants to return to the classroom), a subject that the school in question was deemed to be a level 4 by OfSTED last year.... So I guess, in reality this decision was a no-brainer....

However, I was told that it was a tough decision between us. The head told me that in the end it boiled down to my answer on what my KS1 classroom would look like..... I talked about independent/collaborative/teacher led learning, effective role play/topic/creative curriculum, up-to-date appropriate displays that were a mixture of our work that we were proud of and learning resources, engaged pupils, a clear focus upon the subject area that they are working to improve (being careful to not hit any raw nerves). I'm sure that it will be obvious when pointed out to me - but what did I do wrong?

Well, I am no KS1 specialist, so I cannot possibly begin to guess what was the answer that they were looking for!
But perhaps Lara or Minnie will pop up and tell us.

Thanks for that vote of confidence Theo. Not that I'm such an expert but sounds quite a good answer to me and may just be 'something to say' for why they didn't give you the job.
Perhaps you could 'flesh out' the answers though.
Would you carousel the independent/collaborative/teacher led learning, and how would you do this? What would your record-keeping for monitoring this look like? What proportion of the time would be given to which? How much free choice would the children have? etc.
How would you 'cultivate' individual learning? . . . .
Really it's sometimes difficult to answer a question like that 'off the cuff'. Next time try preparing an a nswer & try looking in the ofsted criteria, if there's a particular focus they might want the new post-holder to focus upon.

Definitely vote for you over me on this!

Errr, I'm moving to KS1 for the first time in my career in September, so not sure I'll be much help either! Sorry.

I would say you maybe needed to focus more on what the children were actually doing, and what you and the TA would be doing. Basically they are asking how they would know learning was taking place if they wandered in.

But then again it could just be that what they want their KS1 classrooms to look like did not fully match up with yours and the other candidate's did. It could be that there was nothing wrong at all in your answer and in a different school you would have got the job over her after both of you giving the exact same answers.

Yes, a very valid point, Minnie
