Dear Theo - What is wrong?

I have been very lucky so far - I have been offered interviews with lots of temp contracts - I even had to withdraw as I was offered a post which will take me until the end of this academic year. However, I am still looking for a perm post and have sent off lots of applications, visited all the schools, yet I never, ever get shortlisted. Now I realise that the competition is probably more, but it is so disheartening when I just want to settle down in a school. I had a bad time in my only perm post I had and left with a CA, but this has not stopped me getting 2 short-term contracts since. I just want to get an interview - I have checked my forms against the advice you give and have had positive feedback from the applications I have made, but not getting anywhere. What else can I do to get shortlisted other than what has already been suggested?

There's no secret info that we hide so that we can bring it out in this sort of situation, I'm afraid. It's checking carefully that you are following the advice, then taking a deep breath and deciding to go one step further.
It seems that you may need expert help. E-mail Julia on advice@tes.co.uk and ask about (a) the application review service and (b) the Job seminars. You'll have to pay for this, but if it gets you that elusive job . . .
    Dear Theo.....I got the job!!!!!
And a final thing would be booking a one-to-one meeting with me or someone else in the team. Again, Julia can tell you about this.

Sorry that I can't pull a secret ingredient out of the hat - but have another read of the advice and see if there's anything that you've missed.
For an effective application, you should send:
    • an application form with every bit filled in, no "See letter"
    • an application letter OR personal statement. Not both but certainly one of them.
    • a cover letter ONLY if you do a personal statement. See FAQs inside the Welcome thread
    • an Executive summary. If there's a space on the form, put it in there; if not, put it at the end of your letter so that it gets printed out automatically. The shortlisting clickables explain about this. It looks as though the forms have room for the executive summary, so put it there and then do a separate application letter.
    Best wishes
