    Hi Theo and others,

As my post subject suggests I want to convert from Secondary to Primary and
was wondering what my chances are.

I qualified in August this year with a PGCE in Secondary Geography with ICT,
but feel I don't have the confidence/ability to tackle behaviour at this level
following my training year. I have undertaken several weeks of work experience
in Primary schools over the past two years where I have helped out in the classroom and been on school trips. In addition at my most recent visit I
carried out an impromptu lesson, I enjoyed the experience and felt confident in
my abilities working with this age group.

I undertook the PGCE at Secondary level as I want to enter into Environmental
Education after gaining significant teaching experience and felt after
having spoken to others in the sector that learning to teach at Secondary level
would be most appropriate. However as I mentioned after my training year
I really lacked confidence in my ability to manage behaviour and feel this is
hindering my ability to gain an NQT position. I only applied to 9 teaching
positions between March and July and gained 5 invites to interview but only managed to
attend 3 due to the 200 mile distance I had to travel from my training area
(North Wales) to the job seeking area (South East England). Whilst I gained
positive feedback from my interviews, at one interview it was my ability (or inability) to display that I could
manage behaviour that stopped me from getting the position.

However I am currently undertaking a 12 month contract at a day nursery
where I am following the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. I feel
confident working with younger children and confident in my ability to teach at
KS1 or KS2. The experiences I've had at Primary Schools has also shown me that
I am able to manage, teach and work with Primary aged children right from Reception to Year 6.

I'm hoping that in the coming months I will be able to find an NQT position
to start in July or September next year but would preferably like to find a
vacancy at a Primary School, preferably with years 3/4. Obviously there will be
many Primary trained teachers seeking employment to compete with and I understand that if I
undertake my NQT year at a Primary school it will be additional work but do you
think there is the possibility of gaining a Primary NQT position despite
training at Secondary? Would you recommend carrying out the induction year at Primary level even though I trained at Secondary? Do you have any recommendations of ways I could improve
my chances of achieving a Primary position?
I look forward to your reply.
    Thanks.
    Victoria.
