Dear Theo -Student interview panels and interview lessons

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by Msongwe, Feb 6, 2012.

  1. I am getting precisely nowhere - well I tell a lie I get loads of interviews but no job. One Head even told me I looked much better on paper than in person - that really boosted the old self-confidence. I have worked hard to address all the feedback I get. Now in the last two interviews I attended I was told that the students in the student interview panel said they did not think I would be up to the task of controlling challenging students. Behaviour management is not something which comes naturally to me and I am not a 'scary and authoritative'

person - but I am capable of controlling students using all the tried and tested methods - focus on praise, setting out my expectations and being consistent and predicatable with sanctions. However, what can I do to put this across in (a) an interview lesson (b) a student panel interview? I am an NQT - qualified July 2011. Any advice?[/b]

Primary or Secondary? And if latter, which subject?
Need to know before can say anything else . . .
    Best wishes

I do Application and Interview one-to-ones, and also contribute to the Job Application Seminars. We look at application letters, executive summaries and interviews, with practical exercises that people really appreciate.
I shall be doing the Win That Teaching Job seminar on Saturday February 25th

Secondary Science, then behaviour mangement is very important - it's a H&S issue.
You say that you are capable - how do you know?
The best answer to that would be: In my observed lessons my classroom management and control of the students have been praised; I can ensure a safe and effective learning environment.
And of course, having that in the actual application would be very good too.
So, have you had that sort of comment? What sort of comments DID you have? That is the way forward for you.
    The other point:
It looks as though you are not coming across as a confident person. Head up, eyes around the room, sweeping all the students in as you sit down. Don't try to be over-friendly, as that seems to be your downfall. Try to come across as the person in charge. Try to look important . . .
    Best wishes
