Dear Theo - References

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by salimali15, Mar 24, 2012.

  1. Does anyone know if schools generally take up references before or after interviews? Also, are previous Heads able to refuse to give references?
    Thanks

Q1 They are required (it is Statutory Guidance) to take up references before interview if a maintained school in England and Wales.
Q2 A former employer is under no legal obligation to provide a reference, unless there was a specific contractual agreement to do so.
    Two other quick points:
    3. You should give as one referee your current or most recent employer in a job involving work with children - this basically means the Head.
    4. If you are doing supply work, try to get a Head to agree to write a reference as those written by supply agencies are usually dire: Mr Griff has been working with us a supply teacher in various schools since September 2010.
That's it. the lot. All they write, many of them.
    Best wishes
