Dear Theo - Reference requests

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by 800timbo, May 23, 2011.

  1. Dear theo,

My school has been asked to provide a reference for me for a job I applied for. Is it normal to be offered an interview if they have requested a reference?

    Thank you!

  3. Usually means an interview. They will be hoping to get references through by time of interview. Having said that, i did once have my reference requested and then didn't hear from them - not sure what happened there, pretty sure my reference wasn't horrendous!

  4. Requesting a reference is not guaranteed to get you an interview unfortunately.
There seems to an increasing practice for schools to longlist after taking up references then shortlisting for interviews once they have all the candidates information. Some schools seem to do this to save time ,particularly when the closing date is close to the date they wish to hold interviews. No surprise really when you consider there are now very many more applicants chasing fewer jobs. Best of luck in getting an interview !

Sorry to disappoint you - the posters above are all correct.

    I
do Application and Interview one-to-ones, and also contribute to the
Job Application Workshops. We look at application letters, executive
summaries and interviews, with practical exercises that people really
    appreciate.

The Job Seminars are all sold out, I'm afraid, but Julia is planning some more later on.

A new SLT seminar is planned for 18 June.

E-mail Julia on advice@tsleducation.com for how to book a meeting with me personally.

    Look forward to seeing you!

  7. Does this mean that they choose the shortlist based on the reference, rather than the application form? May be a silly question sorry!

  8. It is a combination of both.Employers are looking at what you have said about yourself (Application form -ES) as well as how present /previous employers see you and your achievements/potential (Reference). Potential employers will weigh up both before inviting you to interview. It is a successful interview and observation of you teaching which will get you the job having successfully cleared the first two hurdles.

Yes - don't blame your referees if you don't get from the long list to the short list!
    Good luck.
