Dear Theo: Overlong Personal Statement?

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by pinkjacqui, Jun 12, 2011.

  1. Dear Theo, I am currently applying for jobs where the application forms contain a space for information in support of my application, but give no guidance on how long this should be other than asking me to continue on an additional sheet 'if necessary'. I've come into teaching late, and have life experiences which I feel are relevant and have been including these alongside all of the skills I have acquired whilst training. As a result, my supporting statement is approaching three pages long. Is this too long, and will it put prospective schools off, please? I haven't included executive summaries up until now, but I'm intending to summarise my selling points into one, following your advice, to include alongside my forms.

I suggest that you put your E.S. in the space on the form, and then have your statement separately.
And, yes, 3 pages is almost certainly too long.
And I say this quite firmly, because you say:
I'm afraid that too many candidates who have other experiences concentrate too much on these.
    Be brutal!
What can you shorten, what can you omit all together?
    Over to you . . .
    Best wishes
