Dear Theo, intray advice

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by scarlet03, May 21, 2011.

  1. Dear Theo,

I have an interview on Wednesday for a DHT position in my school. I am petrified! I've only been there as an AHT for a year and wasn't expecting to be shortlisted due to lack of experience!
I have to prepare a paper to present, which I'm OK about, but have no other information about the day except that there will be a further shortlisting between day one and day two. I have an idea that I might well be asked to do an intray activity and am extremely nervous about it. The last time I did one I really messed it up and I don't feel that I have a 'strategy' to be able to complete it. One of my real issues is that I genuinely find it very difficult to express the way that I work through such an activity, I am a real muti-tasker and when presented with a list of tasks I look at it and think "I'd do a bit of that whilst emailing that person, whilst phoning to delegate that, then back to the initial task" etc etc. Isn't that how we all have to work?
So here is my question (finally). When presented with an in-tray activity is there a strategy that you can suggest regarding timing of the whole activity and prioritising? (other than child protection first).
Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, you are right to prioritise. And CP first, followed by H&S - if, IF they are of equal urgency. If the roof is above to fall in on 200 children, that's more urgent than any CP issue!
So classify them by Important - Urgent - Delegate.
Something that is both Important and Urgent gets more points, of course.
    Best of luck
