Dear Theo. Internal application

I am applying for a job which is only advertised internally. We've been asked to write a 2 page letter explaining how we meet the 4 page person spec. My letter is currently 3.5 pages so obviously too long.
Would it be unprofessional of me to talk to my Head about cutting it down, adding an exec summary? I feel stuck as I can't discuss it with anyone at school as all Senior staff except the Head are involved.

    Thank you

You are absolutely correct in thinking that you cannot include all these!
How to get it all in? A common dilemma! This is the advice that I give for covering everything in an ES - it works just as well for getting what you need in a letter of application.
    You need to:
    • prioritise
    • group
    • summarise
    • omit
So, don't put on anything that is on the application form (qualifications, etc), or if there isn't one ads it's internal, that they already have details of. See what is really really important for them - and in the case of something that is going to be assessed through the reference, or the interview, don't include it. UNLESS it is v important - e.g. Outstanding teacher and there you can honestly say something like: Lesson observations graded by Mentor as Good with some aspects Outstanding.
You certainly need to summarise - if you look at the example I give in the Shortlisting clickable, it wasn't like that on their spec, I have cut it down. And sometimes you can group several points together.
Yes, you are correct, it would be wrong.
Your Head will be involved in the selection procedure, s/he cannot therefore support one candidate in writing their application.
    Best wishes

Thank you, I would only have asked him if I could write 3 pages instead of 2 as it is a SLT post but was doubtful of doing that.
Will concentrate on saying more with less words!
