Dear Theo: Further potential problem and dilemma

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by BertyBoo, Feb 3, 2011.

  1. Hi All, Couple of problems. Sorry for lack of paragraphs. So, have my interview for the job I REALLY want. I contacted the HR person at the school yesterday (Wednesday) and asked when the shortlisting would take place as I have big school commitments at my current school in the next two weeks. Wanted to potentially plan out my time and make sure I didn't let anyone down. I got an email response which told me I had been shortlisted. References were requested the same day. Current school missing out answering a couple of questions on the reference down to the Equalities Act 2010. I already fear this will have an impact on my chances. - Firstly, what do you think about that.

Next thing, I still have no information about the actual interview. Only know that I have an interview. No times, class, presentation etc!?! Do I contact the school AGAIN tomorrow to try and find out. Interview is Wednesday next week and would like to plan over weekend.

  3. I would just ring and ask them if they've sent any information yet - be honest, i'm sure they won't mind. They'll probably be able to tell you when they are posting them, if they haven't already so you'll have a good idea about when you might get the info.
Not sure about the equalities act thing though - do you know what the questions were about?

Apparently there is something that you can put in to force paragraphs. Something like <<RETURN>>. If you go to Personal, you can start a thread called How do I get paragraphs on a Mac? Or whatever your problem is - Google Chrome does the same para-eating trick.
Hang on until Friday morning before contacting the school - you don't want to annoy them if it just hasn't got to you yet.
Equalities Act! What were the Qs that they refused to answer - your days off sick, I bet. That's because there are different interpretations of this law, one of which actually is contrary to the legal obligation on schools to ensure that applicants are in good health and fit for teaching.
If it is this, I suggest you write a letter to the Head at the new school like this.
    Dear Mr Griff
    Post of teacher of Arabic
I am to be interviewed for the above post on Wednesday February 9th 2011. I understand that you have asked my current employer, Grungy Grammar School, for details of my sickness absence record for the last two years, but they have declined to provide you with this information, citing the Equalities Act 2011 as their justification.
Although I do not keep actual records of my absences, as they are so infrequent, to the best of my recollection I have been absent in the last two years for no more than X days, for minor illnesses. It is my belief that I am competent and fit to teach, as I comply with the criteria for Fitness to Teach set out in the Department for Education document: Fitness to teach: Guidance for employers and initial teacher training providers 2007.
    Your sincerely, BertyBoo.
Check first that you do comply! http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/docbank/index.cfm?id=11387
    Best wishes
