Dear Theo: flexible working request

Dear Theo (and anyone else who can help),

I am due to return from maternity leave in July and have put in a flexible working request asking to reduce my hours to 3 days a week from September.
The school are arguing saying I have to start my new contact when I return from maternity leave. I don't think this is right but would appreciate some advice.
As far as I was aware, anyone can make a flexible working request (as someone else has in my school) and they would start their's from September - if that's what they asked for - so I shouldn't be at a disadvantage as I've been off.
It is not a maternity leave return form so surely it should be treated separately?
    Can anyone help?
I have also posted this in the pregnancy forum but have had no response so thought maybe this was a better place to post!
    Many thanks

It should not be treated differently. If every other request would start in September, so should yours. To make you change your contract on reurn from maternity leave is discriminatory - contact union. Your right is to return to precisely the job and conditions of service you left.
