Dear Theo - application help please!

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by supavillain, Jun 9, 2011.

1. After 2 years out of the classroom I'm thinking of applying for a job
starting in September. However, the last application I did got me the feedback
that my 'personal statement' was a little to 'factual' and I needed to include
more about my 'educational ethos' and 'what I could bring to the Department'.

Now I'm not even sure what's meant by 'educational ethos' so any help with
that would be great. Also I'm assuming they don't mean can I bring in cake every
Friday so what sort of things should I be thinking about to make them think
that they can't manage without me in their Department?

Also, am I deluding myself that I even stand a chance after so long away
from the classroom? ( I've been examining, moderating and writing English
resources so not exactly sitting around watching Jeemy Kyle!)

Sorry to sound so needy but I'm on the verge of forgetting about teaching altogether and just wanted to get a little unbiased opinion.

Now, I can't write your statement for you!
Firstly, make sure that you have read the shortlisting clickables in the Welcome thread. This gives some basic ideas.
Then sit down and think what is important to you in educating pupils. Write a few notes, the things that you ensure always take place, the things that you would refuse to give up. That's your ethos.
As for your contribution - what makes you special? You could produce and share resources, yoiu could lead a moderation group, you could help assessing pupils and identifying those who need interventioin to make the grade . . . just looking at what you've been doing when you've turned Oprah off . . .
Best wishes
