Dear Theo and others: Applying somewhere I was interviewed before

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by gnomes, Mar 27, 2011.

  1. Dear Theo and anyone else who may be able to help,
I was interviewed last year at a lovely school and was absolutely gutted not to get the job. In an email after the interview, the head told me it was a very close call between me and the person they appointed but they went with someone who had a different subject specialism to me (Primary btw) and they went with them as that was their SIP priority that year. She said it wasn't a case of wrong person, just wrong time and mentioned twice in the email that I should look out for them again in the future and that she'd be more than happy to see me apply again.
So, it's jobs time again and two jobs have come up at the school this year. I'd love to apply again but am worried about my application. The person specification is exactly the same as last year - I kept it - am I'm just really not sure how I can phrase my supporting statement any differently. The head said my statement was really strong last year and I'm not sure if I need to completely re-write it to the same headings or just adapt it to include the extra work I have taken on this year.
I really need a new job as I commute hours everyday and this new school is a ten minute walk away! It would change my life. Any tips?
  2. The Head isn't going to remember what you put on your application last year. So I'd say: don't mess with a winning formula! Just add in stuff that you've done since last year.
Of course, I'm an unemployed, dole-scrounging loser who has been unsuccessfully applying for an NQT post since October 2010 so maybe do the opposite of what I suggest. [IMG]
    Good luck! xx

I had this, applied for a job - first interview and was told I came a close second and if there had been 2 jobs I would have gotten one. 6 months later job advertised again so I applied and didn't even get an interview that time [IMG]
  4. I've been in the same situation - had an interview, didn't get the job but I was told I came second and urged by Head and SMT to apply for any jobs in the future. End of last year another job cropped up, so I applied and got an interview. Didn't get the job - I'm guessing one of the three internal candidates there got it!
I would still go for it, mention in your application you've had an interview there before and were impressed with staff/pupils etc so you're very interested in applying again.

That was good to get posituve feedback like that.
    I suggest that you:
    1) apply again
    2) Use exactly the same application plus a few nex extra good bits about yourself
    3) but have a sentence simewhere along the lines of: when I applied for your post in Nivember last year, I was very pleased to see how much my ethos was reflected in the ethos of the school. Or something that is positive about you and them and reminds them of you being there.
This shouldn't invlove very much work at all - another bonus for you!
    Best wishes

    Fingers crossed for you gnomes.
  8. Thanks all for your excellent advice. I was worried about just updating my statement but I agree not to mess with it too much -especially as the head told me it was very strong.
Will let you know if I get anywhere - thanks all!
  9. I think this has helped me too...I was interviewed for a post recently and no-one was appointed and it was now been readvertised. Think I might just apply for it again after all this good advice.
    Many thanks
  10. not "was now..." of course but "has now..." !
Why isn't there a delete post/edit function on here!
