Dear Theo and All- Writing an Exec Summary

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by f.a.b, Nov 17, 2011.

  1. Dear Theo and All,

Yes I have done a search and there are many threads on the golden ticket that is, the executive summary! However, most end with Theo's wonderful post with all the clickables and links and that's it.
I have read and understand why the example given on TES is of an SLT post, however I am trying really hard writing an exec summary for the first time but I need to know if what I am doing is right?
So, with Theo's permission, can we use this thread to give examples? or ask others if what I have wrote is correct etc?
    for eg,

Your req: a high standard of qualification with QTS
My exp: PGCE in secondary science, specialising in Biology, with QTS; Sep 09- Jun 10

    BSc (Hons) __________ , 2:1

Is this right? or too much?

Also if there is someone who is willing to help me out and wouldn't mind taking a look at my full exec summary once I've done please let me know. Thanks

  2. Ok that's fine, I can understand. I think now I have just lost any confidence in my writing I feel a constant need for someone to check it.

Could you just let me know if the example about qualifications I gave is correct?

    many thanks.

OH and also, if I was to have a one to one session with you Theo, would you be able to give me more direction as to 'this is correct, this is too long write it like this' etc like I would come with everything written my exec summary, letter and statement? Or is it just an informal chat?

Just this once, just this once, but I won't ever again!
I would put the BSc (Hons) 2.1 first. And say in what. Psychology? Geography? Maths? Could be anything . . . Make the PGCE bit shorter.
And if you are stuck for space to get it all in on one page, I'd leave the qualifications bit out completely, as it will be on the application form. If you can fit it in, do so of course.
Yes, I do whatever people find most useful in these sessions, quite often doing something different from what you thought you wanted once we start going! So I can be flexible according to what your needs are and what they may sometimes develop into during the session.
I ask you to send in beforehand a recent application that you have sent off (or are just about to send, depending on the timing) and we can go through it thinking if this is the best way to present you and your strengths. I give you examples and help you develop your own thinking on how to set about the whole horrible application thing!
I specialise in applications and interviews, with some career path guidance too. But I do not have any availability until mid-December, I'm afraid.
    Best wishes
