Dear Theo, A bouyant Independent school?

Discussion in 'Independent' started by artbot, Feb 16, 2011.

  1. Hi Theo
Its been a long time hasn't it-I have some news my wife has managed to be appointed to an independent school after 9 months of doing supply!! I would like to ask you a question-I read somewhere you had knowledge of fiancial status of Independent schools; well atleast I thought you did-Is there anyway we can check the state of the school? These are hard times so we need to make sure-It is really fantastic though-cant believe it really.....Can you advise? cheers Theo.

  2. If you mean the financial state of the school, the accounts will most likely be available for public view via the Charity Commission website. They may not have the most recent year though.

Good news about the job! I always think that supply is excellent preparation for a permanent post, because if you can adapt and be successful in those conditions, you'll do exceedingly well at a fixed job.
Yes, Charity Commission. They have to post them about a year after the end of the financial year, so not completely up to date. And you have to be able to read accounts and understand them . . .
Another pointer is the size of the school (big'uns have more buffer), the fees level, the academic success. Plus membership of a respected association, although that is not any guarantee of finacial stability, of course, but shows general respect for the school.
And the general feel. If it looked run down, there may be a reason for that!
Congrats to Mrs Arbot from me.

  4. Yes thank you Theo-Still cant quite believe it actually-Yes the school is run down and a noticeable lack of resources-However all funding coul dbe going to wages and for the children, I wish I could tell you the school as you might know it and could advise.
I can see above that you do careers advice-I have an interview for a PGCE course and I HAVE To get in for my family-do you think you could help me? Maybe you could PM me with details?? Is it expensive? Or i could just email Julia -what do you think? cheers

Artbot - I suggest that you e-mail Julia and ask about a PGCE course interview with Prof Howson. He is SO WISE and really helpful with careers advice.
I do Job Hunting advice rather.
Yes, although less than most Careers Services in London (who are not education specialists) it is pricey - £200 - but think of it as an investment in your future.
    Best wishes
