Dear Emma ...Return to work place advice

      I qualified with QTS in 2004. My teaching experience is pretty varied. I've done day to day supply, temporary maternity cover, permanent class teacher positions throughout KS2 and a PPA cover role.

      I stepped out of teaching in 2012 (I had a baby in 2011 and returned part time for a year in my PPA cover role.) I then went on to have another baby and have not yet returned to teaching (I considered for a long time whether I would or not.) In my time out of the classroom I have continued to offer private tuition to families who have wanted some additional support for their child, so I have regularly planned against objectives to teach children in KS2.

      My eldest is now in f/t school and my youngest is about to start 2.5 days at nursery (9-3pm.)

      I would like to know whether any school based teaching role might accommodate my availability and if so what? A classroom teacher would not work as I have to take and collect my son from nursery (we moved 3 weeks ago to a new area and don't yet have the connections/support to help out.)

      Is taking my CV to a school a good idea, potentially to enquire about PPA cover?

      I would like advice on possible next steps in this next year to get my foot back in the door of teaching. Once my son starts f/t school next year, I can sort breakfast and after school clubs to support my working hours.

    Hi louloul,

    Firstly, I'm really glad to hear that you're considering returning to teaching. In the current recruitment crisis, I think we really need to build on supporting qualified teachers to return to the profession if they've stopped for a while!

    Secondly, I hear you re. young children. The jigsaw that is life with young children can be massively challenging.

    You have clearly made an effort to remain in touch with education and young people, which is an advantage.

    You need to have a clear narrative to explain your varied experiences in teaching - some schools may be wary of so many different contexts and you need to be ready to be questioned on this. There will, of course, be one - and you don't need to share it here - but ensure it focuses on the positives of your experiences and what you gained from your various roles.

    At this stage, I would advise that:

    1. You sit down with your support network at home and work out exactly how much time you would realistically be able to offer in each week - 3.5 days? 2 days? 4 mornings?

    2. You have a choice here. Increasingly, I have heard people advising contacting schools directly and this can't do any harm, IMO. It will also be worth looking out for advertisements for part-time roles... or possibly considering agencies. It strikes me that for people in your position, the 'ideal' scenario may be a job-share - can you put out the feelers in your local area to see if anything like that might be possible? I'm not suggesting it's easy to secure one, but I have known people succeed in doing so, and it's generally worked well.

    Finally, having re-read your post, I wonder whether it is essential for you to get back to teaching this year OR whether you might consider some TA work to keep you in the classroom? If it is financially viable for you, time to get to know the area and put your feelers out - at least until Christmas - may be the best option for you? You could then focus on getting a teaching post for September 2017?
