Dear Clare

  1. Our very successful and popular comprehensive school needs a new Community Governor. Anarticle went in the local paper and we have had six expressions of interest (some with CVs attached). They are all most impressive, and we cannot believe how fortunate we are. They all seem to fit most of the criteria mentioned in the current NGA magzine on a skills audit. However after a meeting last night we realised that we need guidance on where to go from here. Do we conduct "interviews" or is there another method that you would recommend please?.

  3. Lucky you - you could conduct interviews but that could create additional work for the governing body and indeed the candidates - if one of the candidates has the skills you have identified as being useful to your governing body you could put forward that candidate forward for appointment. If the other candidates look good you could perhaps see if they would be willing to serve on Committees as Associate Members with a view to becoming full governors when other vacancies arise. If they are good then depending on how your local authority organises its recruitment of local authority governors you could ask the LA to appoint them to your next LA vacancy.

  4. Thank you for your help. In the end we've appointed three and suggested to the three who didn't get appointed other ways they can get involved in the school.
