    Homemade fly trap-
bowl, bit of unwanted fruit, eg apple core, small amount of water, small amount of washing up liquid in water. Cover bowl in foil, make a hole about half a cm in the top. It works, this does. You need to make the hole by forcing something through the foil and allowing the jagged edges of it to point inwards.
Fly wants the fruit so goes through the hole, but it cannot get out. And if it fancies a bit of a buzz about in the bowl, it gets stuck in the mega meniscus of the washing up liquid solution. You can empty this outside later on and the fly will live, if your conscience is one that extends beyond humans, dogs and cute cats. However, it will probably come back the next day out of spite, and if you do it too many times in a row with the same fly and the wind changes, when you look in the bowl at the end of the day you will see this through the hole.

    ....so I keep trying

We had such a maggot infestation in the bin last year you could actually hear them munching without lifting the lid

If the dog hasn't eaten them, I whack them with a tea towel.
