Comply or die! A quiet voice, a measured tone...

    Hi All,

    I've one of those "challenging conversations" a few days ago.

    During my career as a teacher, I have always tried to encourage pupils to ask pertinent questions, in a quiet voice with a measured tone. In children it is something to be admired.

    Unfortunately, I would advise against it at all costs if you value your career at all.

    Whilst observing the observers during an observation (there were 2) during a lesson I was teaching, I noticed that they were questioning children about their learning (there is nothing wrong in this at all). However I saw them speak to 8 children and suddenly stop, they left the class.

    Afterwards, I had feedback.

    One child of the 8 was not able to say exactly what the learning objectives was. The observers then concluded that I had not properly explained the Lo & SC. I was failed on this target. They told me who had not been able to say the LO and SC- it was a child with IEP and cognitive delays.

    I asked them whether there was a system for which children they questioned or if they had decided to keep going through the whole group until they found someone who gave them the answer they wanted so as to fail me on this target?

    The observers were very annoyed with me- I'm not sure why.

    I asked them what particular words they wanted to hear from a child with cognitive delays who did not have a TA with them at that particular time?

    Is it me? Did I insult their intelligence by asking these questions?

    They were mightily affronted, and very annoyed.

    I am hated and loathed by SMT.

    Oh dear SSS, I'm sorry you're having such a tough time with all of this.

    What they've done sounds desperately unfair by any definition. You need to tell your Union rep' exactly what happened as it does sound as though you've been set up to fail this observation.

    I don't blame you for challenging them BTW, not at all.

    No one is able to explain what 'progress' means in different situations but my god they love bandying the word around. I used be able to use selective hearing when managers uttered rubbish, so that the majority of my energy could be transferred to my students, but now the idiots come around with megaphones and tick lists, alas we have no choice.

    Take your set 6, not the transition group at GCSE, but neither are they your D's 'who can be pushed to a 'C'.
    Teachers of all sets have the same time to go through the spec and deliver the content.
    Almost every lesson is new content.
    these sets have the most number of EALs and SENs with no support whatsoever.
    Should teachers go over the same content over and over again in different ways until they get it, or should they carry on to get through the majority of the content, leaving enough time to go through past papers so that students get enough practice at reading and writing model answers to increase their chance of getting higher grades.
    These decisions are determined not by individual teachers nowadays, but by HODs under pressure from their own micromanaging non specialist line managers, who then come around to judge teacher 'performance'

    Can you challenge anything they say? Not when it is as a direct result of a staffing decision they passed down 7 months ago.

    The things they pass judgements on seem to be about a lesson in a parallel universe.

    As in your case with the SEN 8 year old. What does the useless bit of feedback about LOs have to do with the reality of the school expecting you to do two jobs at the same time (teacher and LSA)?

    I'm so sorry that this is happening to you. I know how awful it can be when your face suddenly doesn't fit. I have read quite a few of your posts recently and I don't mean to sound patronising but i think you're dealing with it really well. what your observation is screaming to me is that they are determined not to let you 'win' and will go to considerable lengths to discredit you. There are better schools out there run by kinder people. You deserve to find one.

    Thanks for all your replies.

    The focus on high standards is so great that the SLT are becoming deranged.

    I would never expect a child with mild to moderate global delays to parrot LO and SC.

    How on earth did they actually become leaders?

    @vannie I am not taking this process well at all.

    It's ridiculous.

    The ability to recall a LO has no bearing at all on the quality of the lesson. If it did, they'd show you the evidence. The fact that 1 out of 8 pupils can't recall it, makes their comments look stupid. The fact that that one pupil has an IEP etc, makes them look even more stupid.

    To then disparage the ability of a teacher on such a basis, means those people shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a shelf that needs stacking*, never mind children, or professional teachers.

    *With apologies to shelf stackers for comparing them to the fools in question

    Imagine what sir Isaac newton could have achieved. If only. If only
    he'd been given a clear LO each lesson, followed by a next step, which was checked and followed up promptly by his tutor. The wasted potential is nothing short of criminal.

    Just to say you have my support, been through similar levels of stupid and there is a better world on the other side.

    Amazing how stupid, venal people manage to get ahead in education.

    In the last few years of my teaching career, I came across some of the nastiest, narcissistic, most unapproachable people I have ever met; the sort who only enjoys one-sided conversations with those whom they have figuratively levelled the barrel of a gun

    Some years ago a Deputy Head I knew retired ( I think he was in his early 50s) and got a job as a Postman.

    He loved it.

    (That was in the days when you got on with and respected SLTs so a while back!)

    Hi C,

    One postman I knew had a first in PPE from Oxford, I went to secondary school with him. Some of our peers used to scoff at him- but I am beginning to see how this may have suited him.

    Another postman, my colleague's husband, had a Philosophy degree. I asked him why he did his job-
    1. He enjoyed keeping fit, but hated gyms- this suited him
    2. He liked having a "PB"
    3. He preferred having no conversations during his working day to having to put up with oafs who were not on his wave length (his words not mine)
    4. He loved being able to see the sky, notice the seasons and make friends with the odd cat
    5. Once his job was done, he could do whatever he wanted.

    What he tolerated about his job-
    1. Early starts in winter.
    2. Dogs/ dog poo
    3. Poorly addressed envelopes
    4. Broken lifts
    5. Bizarre house/ building numbers or names instead of numbers

    He didn't sell it every well at the time..... but it's strange how your situation can change your view of things...
