Complusory at KS4 or not?

Discussion in 'Modern foreign languages' started by Tuohey, Feb 27, 2012.

  1. I am very interested to hear from teachers in schools where most students take a language at GCSE. Up until now in our school, most students did languages, but there was an option to remove the very weakest who would struggle (even more so now with CA). As Year 9 options approach we are meeting more resistance when we advise that some pupils really cannot cope with the speaking and writing aspects of the course. What does everyone else do? I would keep them but have to make sure that SLT realise that they will not stand a chance of a C grade. Help please, I would love to hear from you all.

Hitherto it has been completely optional for the last few years. The take-up has been so poor that there is no French in this year's Year 11 and only one set of German. Year 10 are a little better with 3 small classes of Spanish, French and German. They are all, of course, due to the small numbers, completely mixed ability.

Even now with the Ebacc they are not going to direct any of them to do it. We are waiting to see what the uptake is.
