Bet that a lot of Time and Money
NASA has just ordered 4 portions of Crispy Moon Rock
If the landing is for purely scientific (as opposed to military or commercial purposes) then good on them. Some astronomers grimace or roll their eyes when they hear someone talk about the dark side of the moon (unless they're also Pink Floyd fans), but I notice that the BBC used it, rather than the 'far side'.
All of the manned and unmanned soft landings so far have taken place on the near side of the Moon to allow for direct radio contact. The Chang'e 4 is maintaining contact via a small communication relay satellite.
You can never be sure with the Chinese Government - unfortunately
Nevertheless - it's a fair achievement
There is no such thing as "the dark side of the moon."
(Ah! I see Nomad has already referenced this, but I'll leave it for emphasis)
Heard some woman on Today earlier on, interviewing somebody knowledgeable. She actually started off calling it the dark side....., but then went on to explain that it did get some light.
How do we know they did it?
China just flexing its muscles...
It is so they can contact the Dalek invasion fleet without us knowing about it.
Would it really have hurt the Floyd to call it The Far Side Of The Moon?
Mind you, it was released in 1973 so I suppose we cared less for pedantry in those days.
We really did care about accuracy.
I was there.
But did I take the Floyd to task about naming that album?
I did not.
I listened to it several times a day but not once did it occur to me to query the title.
I hang my head in shame.
Didn't you realise it was pretentious carp, like everything they did? (Mind you I didn't at the time)
A great gig in the sky so to speak (I see what you did there even if no-one else did)
I never listen to the lyrics @Ivartheboneless
It really works.
It does for me.
I always like to think Dark side refers to unilluminated by human vision and knowledge.
Anyway... good to see the furthering of human knowledge and achievement.
I never mentioned lyrics. I find the whole thing, and in fact all their output, just overblown pretentious nonsense designed to hoover money from so-called "fans". Everything they did after was "samey". But this is not real, we should be more worried about the Chinese becoming our "masters" as they are already on the way, and will probably infiltrate more into this country (they already have too much of it) when we fall out of Europe desperate for "business" partners (aka Chinese overlords), while the rich who wanted Brexit to stuff their pockets with more of our money sit back in their tax havens rubbing their grubby hands with glee.
"Dark side" - maybe someone in Beijing thought Star Wars was a documentary and they're looking for a trade deal with Darth Vader? It'd probably be easier than negotiating with Trump.
Probing the dark side.
Absolutely. As, for example, the Victorian description of Africa as 'The Dark Continent'.
Ah yes... good example.
The Dark Side would be a good name for this forum, then.
