Children Bringing in Netbooks

I'm thinking of allowing children (Years 5 and 6) to bring in their own personal netbooks from next year. Does anyone do this currently? Any problems you would expect?
    The "problems" I see:
    • they bring in inappropriate material on them they would be banned from bringing them in and using them in school again (currently we allow memory sticks so I don't really see the difference.)
    • they cannot afford one - they're not being made compulsory but would be useful since we're now giving children a lot more opportunity for independant research
    • viruses - are school computers and servers are fully protected (as much as we can!)
When they are used here they would be governed by the schools filtering and monitoring.
Like I said, just in the thought stage at the moment but we're finding, in a school with one suite and one set of 18 laptops, that 12 classes of 35 children want the computers more than they are available.

Unless they have their own 3G of course.
What if their laptop has packet sniffing software? or other hacking resources on it? How would you know?

Admittedly, I wouldn't but we are talking about children between the ages of 9 - 11 so we have to look at likelyhood here, otherwise we'd never allow anything. In my opinion it's a calculated risk that I'd be prepared to take for the educational benefits it would allow.
