Childcare Grant/Parents Learning Allowance help please!

Discussion in 'Thinking of teaching' started by winnieg, Mar 6, 2011.

  1. I have been searching the web for as much info as possible on what I am likely to get in the way of finance for my PGCE course next year. I have two young children and live with my husband who earns approx £30k. We have a mortgage, need 2 cars for jobs now, and will definitely need next year to travel to my placement; childcare will cost us approx £800 pcm. The scrapping of the £4k bursary is a severe blow! I am working now as a TA and am actually out of pocket - good think I love my job! I am just wondering if I will be totally bankrupt or if anyone can advise if I may be entitled to the Childcare Grant and Parents Learning allowance. Everything I canfind just says it is means tested but no indication of the thresholds. So frustrating! Any help gratefully received.

  2. You are unlikely to receive any payment under Childcare Grant and Parents Learning Allowance. The cut-off level is around £10k to £15k of household income.

  3. thanks Claire that's really helpful. I will just have to apply & hope for the best. Our mortgage is pretty high and childcare is just so expensive isn't it?! Hopefully they will agree that without the childcare grant I won't be able to do the course. Fingers crossed!
