I was giving out to a student, I was really cross with him for some reason, so I was giving it yards. After a minute or so (seriously cross!), of my tirade I realised that he had more or less the same expression as when I started,I asked him if he only heard 'Many blahs..John..many more blahs'.
He agreed with that and said that he tuned out because he knew there was an annoyed teacher giving him a lecture, with a punishment of some sort given when lecture was finished.
He also knew there'd be a long pause at end of said lecture which would be his cue to apologise and accept whatever punishment was meted out
Lesson learned..now I only 'give it yards' in truly exceptional circumstances
