    Hello all,

We run a website called ‘Careers at Sea’ (http://www.careersatsea.org) highlighting the opportunities available to people who work within the Merchant Navy. With 95% of UK trade coming by sea, the Merchant Navy is valuable to the UK, but very few people know of its existence let alone the opportunities available to them within it. Every year the Merchant Navy takes on cadets to train as Deck (Navigation), Engine or Electro-Technical Officers on board any ship, of any size, anywhere in the world. Cadets are sponsored by companies which means there are no tuition fees for the student but they gain professional qualifications, such as a Foundation Degree, at the end of their course. They also get a training allowance whilst they are learning and, on top of the free qualifications, cadets travel the world and get generous amounts of time off depending on their work rotations.

After they qualify as an Officer, the world is their oyster and they can truly go anywhere they wish to, or stay at work in their local port.

There are also a number of options for those who wish to work on ships, but do not want to be officers. People can train to be ratings or work in hospitality and still get all the advantages of working at sea.

To help us spread the word, we have nearly 250 Careers at Sea Ambassadors that are available to give presentations, or have a stand at a careers fair to show people there are options they may have never considered before. These Ambassadors are serving (or former serving) seafarers that volunteer their time to show young people that there are far more options available to them than they may have thought. These volunteers are based all over the UK and are happy to travel a reasonable distance to attend school talks, presentations or career events.

Additional information can be found on our website under the ‘Ambassadors’ section. We provide Ambassadors with the materials they need to deliver the information necessary, but it is their own real life experiences of being at sea that make their presentations stand out. The materials that we provide including pens, bookmarks, leaflets, videos and posters can be sent to your schools for your careers libraries or for lesson use.

If you would like a visit from an Ambassador, some more information or would like some materials for your school, please do contact us on enquiry@careersatsea.org

We look forward to hearing from you and showing your students the wonderful opportunities a career at sea can provide.

    Kind regards,
    C@S
