Can SMT dictate the scheme of work in a specific subject?

    Afternoon,
I have just had an interesting document land in my pigeon hole from SMT. It basically says that that all students will be taught in ECDL as of 2012. The first I have heard of it. As Head of Computing I want to set my own schemes of work, after all I think in the school I am best placed to know what content is needed to be taught to pupils in my own specialism. Do the SMT have the right to dictate what my department teaches, I am sure in my contract it states that I am responsible for setting schemes of work for the Computing and ICT department.
Any views/knowledge would be greatfully appreciated.

I would have expected this matter to have been discussed with you and your professional opinion sought but, when it comes down to it, you are employed to carry out the directions of your Headteacher. If you fundamentally disagree with the way your Headteacher runs your school/college, you should leave and seek employment elsewhere.

And, of course, it is the Governing Body who decide the curriculum overall.
    Best wishes

Our HM doesnt do consulting, he tells you what he expects, even if he knows nothing about the subject matter.

Well, if you don't feel your opinion is valued, keep an eye on TES Jobs.
