Hi all, I need some advice. I am currently in month 6 of my NQT in an inner-city London school, and for many reasons, I am keen to leave. In addition to behaviour being very challenging, I have found myself teaching a subject that I am not a specialist in, which has required a lot more time and effort to plan Schemes of Work and Assessments, and practical lessons in a very large room with terrible acoustics mean that I strain my voice regularly and am exhausted on a daily basis (with no help from a technician or TA throughout the whole of Autumn Term). Finally, I don't feel that I am getting the right help from my mentor, who is very busy as head of department, and is often distracted during our meetings, which are rarely one full hour or regular at all. Because I have an auto-immune condition with a weaker immune system, I am prone to fatigue and infections. I have now gone over the 29 days of absence allowed for an NQT, because of infections, stress and a flare-up. As a result, I have been allowed to work a 0.86 timetable, and that has helped somewhat to rest during the week and alleviate my workload. My mentor is encouraging me to stay and see this NQT year through, but I am unsettled and have been struggling to gain continuity and build proper relationships with my students and staff because of my absences. I know it might be tough to start in another school, but it would allow me to teach my subject, to start on a clean slate, and get a part-time role right from the start. What should I do? Can I transfer to another school to finish my NQT, even considering that I now have an extra term to complete, and how do I go about approaching schools? Most jobs I see are roles for September - should I approach schools and explain my situation, even if there are no jobs advertised? Alternatively, can I leave the school and do supply work if no roles are available now? (Does supply work count towards the NQT year?) Also, if I decide to work in another type of school such as an independent school, or a university, do I still need to complete my NQT year? Many thanks for your help!
