Can HTs be made redundant?

I have a post on the HT forum at the moment, but thought here might be worth a try too. Can Headteachers be made redundant? I think my LA are trying to get me out by making me fail (teaching full time as well as HT role) and I was wondering if this is their way of getting me out of post via Ofsted ejection because they can't do it themselves. Is that correct? I would rather they offered me the 0.5fte teaching post in the school up front and gave me the opportunity to set down, rather than being chucked out due to enforced incompetancy, but are they allowed to offer that?
Help! I have tried NAHT, but they have been engaged / too busy for the last 2 days and I need advice now! Thanks.

  3. I may be far wide of the mark but my understanding is that it cannot happen because it is not the person but the job that would be made redundant, and a school has to have a HT. It sounds as if you are getting very poor service from the NAHT.

So if they wanted us to federate then my job would be redundant, wouldn't it? And surely I could ask to be redeployed as a 0.5fte teacher? I winder why they are being si cloak and dagger? Does anyone know of a HT who teaches full time? And all of KS2, at that!?

'si'? Should be 'so'. Sorry. I'm not getting much sleep recently for some reason...

  6. Just who at NAHT have you been trying to contact?
You should have a county secretary (often a serving HT). There will be a Regional Officer ( a Full Time paid officer of NAHT). If you cannot get to either of these have you tried calling NAHT HQ?
If you want, email me with your location and I will get you in touch with your RO. I am a County Secretary for my LA.

  7. I've not heard of a HT who teaches full time. 0.8 is the most I've seen and then you should be entitled to PPA and management time.
Just to be clear, Ofsted don't ever dismiss anybody or even make recommendations to dismiss HTs. This is not in the framework for inspections. If the school is going to be federated, then it's possible a headteacher post will become redundant, but presumably the school will still need a FT teacher in post, so the leadership part might go.

Are you sure? We have had two HTs in our LA who have had Ofsted in, followed more or less the same day by them being 'removed' by the LA. They turned up pretty much mob handed, told them to collect their things and escorted them off the premises. Worryingly no-one even knows what happened to these people after this experience, they haven't been heard of since. So it makes a person worried!!!
Under what circumstances could we be made to federate? If the Governors and staff don't want it, and there's no budgetary reason, could they still force us?

  9. Yes, absolutely 100% sure. This was the LA who might have responded to Ofsted grading L&M as inadequate. Ofsted cannot openly criticise a headteacher or any teacher for that matter. They can make judgements on the leadership of a school but will not, under any circumstances name individuals. This would be in breach of their own code of practice. The employers are the LA and they are the only ones that can remove a headteacher. Ofsted is an independent body who do not hire or fire teaching staff. They inspect and report, that's it.
As far as federating schools is concerned, ideally the governing bodies of the school should be agreeable to the federation. If they are not, and the LA really wants it to go through, they could abolish a governing body and replace it with an interim executive board. Section 65 of the education act allows LAs to do this as long as they have the consent of the secretary of state. In practice, all the LA has to do is prove that the governing body is obstructing progress of the school.

So if Ofsted did find L&M inadeqate don't the LA have to give the HT notice, or do they pay them in lieu? And if it's a teacher failing then they go through capability before they are out, so isn't there anything similar for HTs? I hasten to add I am not in this position myself, just interested in how these things work!
Thanks for your advice, especially about federation and governors.

  11. An Ofsted grade of NTI means they have faith in the leadership to turn the school around. SpM means they don't and usually meams the HT has to go. Once the HT has been contacted by the LA and told their career is effectively over they should contact their union ASAP. Their union officer ( at regional level) will negotiate the best possible deal for them.

Can they go back into a school as an ordinary teacher after that then, or is it McDonalds for them?

  13. I know someone who went back to class teaching after leaving a headship when the school went into SM and I've known others who left headship to get away from the stress who became class teachers and/or supply teachers.
