Calling Year 2 Teachers...?

Discussion in 'Primary' started by beccy.d, Aug 6, 2009.

1. Hey.
I'm an NQT starting in Sept with Year 2 and am currently looking at how to organise my Yearly overview.
I am trying to search for creative curriculum and cross-curricular ideas so that I have an idea of which Literacy units to put with which topics. I hope this makes sense? I'm just going around in circles!!
I have subscribed to Hamilton for Lit and Num. The first narrative unit (stories in familiar settings) is about superheros and non-fiction about sharks... but I am struggling to see what fits best together... without an overview to see how it can all link together and which topics and themes to put with these... I am not going very far.
Hamilton have topics to subscribe to as well. like Fire and JK Rowling for famous people. Does anybody also use Hamilton?? I like the look of the topics but don't want to rely on Hamilton for everything!!! and wondered if anyone could share their ideas, opinions with me??
Thanks for all your help.
and email just in case... missdavies9@hotmail.com

3. Personally I can't stand hamilton.

4. Any other ideas? What do you use instead of Hamilton??

5. I look at the frameworks and go from there.

6. Personally, I love Hamilton, but only to be dipped into and adapted to suit - it's a great starting point to develop your own ideas.

Have you been given an outline of what you are supposed to be covering in year 2? Obviously you're going to need to fit in with what's been done in other subjects in year 1. Is your school using QCA or have you got free reign?
I used some of the Hamilton superheroes planning for my last Autumn topic - healthy heroes and vile villains (y1 & 2). The topic linked literacy with science (health), geography (our school) and PSHE (me and looking after myself). If you decide to do the Superheroes theme, I'd recommend 'Eliot Jones, Midnight Superhero' - fab book which the children loved. For the non-fiction we just did captions and instructions (which fits with the year 1 planning). If I had only year 2 I'd have based some information writing on our school or healthy/unhealthy foods.
If you need anymore help with your yearly overview, just say!

7. Thanks for your help :)
Yes I have an old overiew so...
Science: health and growth, using electricity, grouping and changing materials, plants and animals, forces and movement, variation.

History: Florence Nightingale, The Great fire of London.

Geography: Where in the World is Barnaby Bear? An island home, Going to the Seaside.

ICT: Writing stories, Creating Pictures, Finding Information, Routes, Questions and answers (although a specialist teaches this, I don't plan or teach ICT directly, or so I think. This could change.)

Art: Mother Nature, Can Buildings speak?

DT: How do you like your toast? What should be stuck to the Fridge? How will your roly poly move?
Music: Sounds Interesting, The long and short of it, feel the pulse, taking off, whats the score? rain rain go away. (Is this from music express? ive used it before but not for y2 and it sounds familiar..)

I generally have free reign, they have given me nothing and told me to do what I want!! They just said make it fun!!

Do you use Hamilton for Lit and Num? The fire topic on hamilton looks good for changing materials and history for great fire of london. so i thought it might be worth it for that. but I would really appreciate some advice on how these units can fit together? what should i put with what? Does anyone have a yearly overview? topic webs that might be able to help me?? texts for lit units to go with topics?
thankyou again xx

8. Am little confused [IMG] Do you know what your curriculum topics are? It is then easier to link the literacy units to them. Or are you looking for an overview of all the literacy units you need to cover during the year - if so head to the PNS.
Also you need to decide what year SAT you are going to give them, for instance if you are using 2007 (Riddles and Imaginative Stories) if it only fair that you have taught them at some point during the year.
Hope this helps a little [IMG] and good luck with your NQT

9. Oooph! My compurter had gone mad and didn't see the list of topic that you had already posted! Not so confused not- hehe.
I do have our yr 2 literacy overview for the year, if you would like a copy!
As I said it does depend on the SAT, for example for our far away place in geography (spring2) we did information text unit and riddles linked to the animals that live in mexico.

10. Hi M2S
Could I be very cheeky and ask for a copy of your yr 2 overview. I am also new to year 2 and know I will be doing riddles. Thank you in anticipation.[IMG]

12. Yes please could i have a copy. My email is missdavies9@hotmail.com

do you have an overview of all units and topics and how they fit together?
Do literacy units have to be taught in order like maths?

Many thanks,

Rebecca

13. Hey
They are in the process of changing the KS 1 curriculum at our sch at the moment but last year it ran like this (Slightly linked to QCA):
Buildings: Autumn 1 - Electricity(Science), Our Local Area (geography lighthouses), Can building talk (art building through time), Information posters (ict, lighthouse posters) English(information, traditional tales)
Celebrations: Autumn2 - Materials (science), Creating pictures(ict linked to bonfire + puppet backgrounds), Puppets (D+T, nativity characters), Christmas (history of), English(poetry, trad tales from other cultures, explanations)
Travel + Transport Spring 1- Forces+Movement (science), Roly Poly toys(D+T), History(transport linked to George Stephenson), ICT (find information linked to Stephenson) English(poetry, stories by the same author)
Mexico Spring 2 - Health + Growth(science), Far away place Mexico(geography), Floor turtle controlling (ICT) Picture this art(mexican mask and super heros) English(Infor text and riddles)
Dartmoor Summer 1 - Variation (science), Farming + quarrying (history on Dartmoor), Winding up toys (D+T, rock climber on Dartmoor) English (Familar setting extended stories)
Dartmoor Summer 2 - Plants and animals (science, school compared to dartmoor) Mother Nature(art, william morris and collage) Questions + Answer (ICT sorting animals databases) Dartmoor(geography, maps and letter boxing) English (poetry, Non chron reports)
Some topics more cross curricular than other and as I said it is being changed to move away from the QCA schemes of works.
The literacy can be taught in any order, as I said think about when the children are going to take the English SAT's it is up to you and the Head but you have to leave a week between teaching the unit and testing.
http://nationalstrategies.standards.dcsf.gov.uk/node/150263
the framework gives suggested time and ideas for the units - the teaching sequences overviews for the units are useful but it is up to you when and how you teach them :)
Hope this helps a bit
godd luck M2S

14. thanks for the plan :) im starting to get my head around what should be with what, however... I haven't been told which sats papers i am using so i have no idea how to arrange my lit around my topics...
This might be asking too much... but i am struggling to get going until i can see where everything fits and know where to start... please would anyone mind looking at my yearly overview with my topics on there?? I have devised 2 yearly plans and not sure which way round is best..?

Also... I have worked out what Literacy units would go well with autumn 1 on the plan but have come to a standstill with the rest! I'd be really really grateful for some help with this!!!!
I have a superheroes topic. for which i have included science: health and growth - love the idea contributed on healthy heroes and vile villains? how did this work?? as well as florence nightingale. and literacy i will do stories in familiar settings on superheroes making comics, instructions for making healthy recipes. and poetry is shape poems??? although i would have liked to do food poems... then i have come to a brick wall with how to continue with the rest... please help!

Thanks again and again!

Hi!
To help with your yearly/long term planning we have included several overviews and medium term plans on our site.
Literacy - in the Autumn Term for each year group (single years and mixed age range for R/1, 1/2, 3/4 & 5/6) there is an overview of all the Literacy Units on offer, so that you can plan which of the Units to use from the wide choice we offer, that best fits the needs of your class. It's first in the list of plans in the Autumn Term.
Maths - in each term in each year group there is a Medium Term Planning document which includes an overview of the term's Teaching Sequences. These should be taught in order. This document also includes lots of other advice and help for teachers with mixed age range classes.
Each Science Strand's overview includes a table showing the objectives covered by other Science Strands in your age range. It also indicates how the Strand links to our cross-curricular Topics.
Each Topic's overview includes a table showing the objectives in Foundation subjects & science covered in that Topic and all the other Topics in your age range.
I hope this helps in your long term planning.
As an NQT you can visit www.savenqtsundays.org you can order a FREE CD from us to help with your first term's teaching. It includes the planning for Maths & Literacy & some science and a Topic.
I hope this helps! If you need more advice please email us at enquiries@hamilton-trust.org.uk.

To the original poster; we use a mix of Hamilton Trust and Clickteaching with some own planning thrown in - both sites are excellent and do quite similar ready planned topics, with useful topic overviews. I love CT (clearer planning and easier to navigate around) and my jobshare likes HT (more options). We both subscribe individually but I'm sure the school would pay our subscription if we could get it together enough to take receipts in. Some areas of Clickteaching are a bit underdeveloped (ICT and PE) so I wouldn't use those. We use CT entirely for Maths - you can download the worksheets in Word and differentiate further to your heart's content (it is usually very well differentiated). We link the whole of Literacy to our topic and plan the lot in parallel. So Houses and Homes includes the texts on non-fiction House building which we will also use in topic, and also includes 3 Little Pigs, Winnie the witch, Percy the Park Keeper, etc. You do not have to stick with anything QCA because all the NC BoS and Objectives can be easily covered in whatever topic you like (photocopy the NC and ensure that over the course of one year your topic coverage enables you to highlight as 'covered' each one of the NC objectives in ICT, Science, History,Geography, Art, D&T). We find that this means most topics have to be Science focused because of the amount of Science which needs to be covered. In 'Houses and Homes' we do Materials, Light and Electricity. The justification for doing all this is that you are supposed to be being led by the childrens interests and learning needs.
