Calling all Photography teachers- I need your help!

  1. To any photography teachers or specialists,
    I have an interview next week for a photography post and I have to teach a 20 minute lesson to 25 year 10s on a photography subject of my choice. I will have a darkroom and classroom available to me..... any suggestions?
    I have no idea what I could do that will engage the students and produce great work in such a short time scale! Any suggestions or advice or any good websites I could look at? Please feel free to add me as a friend if it is easier to email me info!

    Frankly I would leave out the darkrrom due to time limitations. Show them some work on portraiture, look at Cindy Sherman, Alice Hawkins, Gillian Wearing. Put into 3's, one is a stylist/director, one model, one photographer. Ask them to set up a quick mini photo shoot working in a three, each takes a turn in each role. Camera with tripod would be nice. It is possible to do this activity without even a camera by the way. They have to decide on the mood of the photo. Create pace by imposing time limits. Explain how a photographer will relate to their subject and use this in the plenary to get feedback on the activity. You won't have time to preview the images but you will have achieved something in that silly 20 minutes.

  5. You could do photograms in the darkroom, you could also do similar in the classroom with sunlight.

  7. just the same way as you would in the darkroom. The paper will start to react quite quickly and then go brown blue shades the more light it recieves. Lay objects over the paper and leave in the light. I've never fixed them before, just kept them in balck bags. if you put the paper in developer it will just go black as all of it will have been exposed to light. I think if you put it in just the fixer it will return to white, digitally photograph them so you have a record, but it does illustrate the idea of light sensitivity
    Use things like feathers, leaf skeletons, bubble wrap, lace etc and weight them down with glass. You will need to practice as it may take a while for the paper to get quite dark, depends on the strength of light
    With the photograms in the darkroom you could also experiment with torches and pin lights to create light trail effects.
    Another thing you could do is get students to draw or trace their own images on to acetate and make photograms with those if you are worried about the time it would take to print from negatives. Photocopies work well for this too if they are weighted with glass.
    You could also paint the developer onto the paper or dribble it on so you are only developing parts of the prints. Its also fun to do blind drawing in this way. Just expose paper to white light on the enlarger and then paint an image with developer and watch it magically appear.
    If you do work in the darkroom make sure you make the students aware of health and safety
    Digital stuff you could do could be looking at movement, fast and slow shutter speeds, decisive moments; you could give a few students an activity to perform and have the rest of the group photograph it. there is all sorts of stuff n the web about both
