I suggested date and walnut. If you make one this week, I'll send one the following. They're sturdy enough to survive posting.

  2. Ok, you do the date and walnut first.
I'll be brave and send a stollen ;-)

    You lovely people! :)
I don't know about the BFPO from Germany question. Are you working on a British base? Hubs thinks that this would work but suggests you consult the unit postmaster. I imagine things are being sent out to Afghanistan from the base, using BFPO. Our leaflet says 'For further information, go to www.bfpo.mod.uk' so you may be able to find out there.
I opted for Nigella's lemon syrup cake this time and have two of them cooling in the kitchen: one for son and one 'for the ship'. Hubs is not happy: lemon syrup cake is his favourite, but there won't be a spare one this time! :)

  4. No - I am just "in Germany" - so I would be going to a normal German post office!
I have no base near to me any longer (and I was not allowed on site without a member of the forces anyway).

Ok. Off to the shops tomorrow for some dates! I'm quite looking forward to this.

Have just gone to the post office with mine. Update on posting: as long as parcels weigh under 2kg, postage is FREE. This is because military personnel deployed to warzones e.g Afghanistan can have mail sent to them at no cost.

    Marvellous!!

  8. Well, I rang the local post office to ask about sending to a BFPO address.
    "What is a BFPO address?"
    "British Forces Post Office address".
"Field? ahhhhhhhhh - Feld? So to a farmer?"
God, why do I always get the loons on the phone?
Anyway - I am none the wiser. I am going to ask the British Consulate.

Oh my life, my husband loves this thread! :) Suddenly its terribly important that we try out cakes at home. He approves of the clementines simmering away at the moment and earlier said "Can we try out that nice glace fruit cake before we send one away?" His waistline won't be shrinking any time soon!

  10. If he peruses the forum, he will find many threads on how to lose weight, lol.

  11. My daughter has decided she wants to "bake for the lads" as well.
We are thinking about what she could bake - she is a cupcake specialist, but I don't think they will travel well.

Lads and girlies! There are some amazing women on board too, at all ranks and officers.

  13. I know - but my daugther is a wee flirt.

  14. As soon as I've got the exam marking out of the way, I'll send one. Dad was in the paras, so it'll be a way of remembering him too.

That's very kind steffiw! Just a reminder to everyone: postage is completely free because the ship is deployed to a warzone.

Ye Gads, Henriette! Your clementine cake is fabulous! Can't see one of those ever making it as far as the post office! ;)

  17. I am still stumped. Apparently, I cannot post for free.
    *sigh*
We will bake and post anyway.

That's a pain, but very lovely of you to post anyway.

Will they rename the ship, HMS Fruitcake?

It is remarkably satisfying posting a cake for free !
