Anita Brookner has passed away. An interesting writer paralleling Simone De Beauvoir, Iris Murdoch, Angela Carter and Margaret Atwood in scope and depth. Ali Smith, Zadie Smith, Monica Ali, Zoe Heller and even L A Kennedy all owe something to her in terms of style and approach. She was a true academic and a writer of melancholic and morose wit. I've always respected her for her dignity and quiet determination and her novels are gems the like of which we seldom see in this modern age.
