BTEC music scrapped??

Discussion in 'Music' started by lemonthelime, Jan 26, 2012.

  1. I was just looking at the EdExcel website and they have released the proposed BTEC 2012 specs. They seemed to have slimmed down the choices and there is now a performing arts BTEC and no specific music one!
Are they getting rid of BTEC music as a qualification?
If so then I'm not sure what we xan offer our kids at KS4 :( had finally got music back on the timetable after 2 failed GCSE groups ( pre-me!) and a couple of years of low uptake. Our kids simply dont have the skills to do GCSE music at the moment, and the new performing arts BTEC seems to be solely performance focused!

They've changed everything - I think in response to the Wolf report. BTEC now only worth 1 GCSE, one of the modules is externally assessed.

Music is now a part of the performing arts BTEC, which has specialisms for music, drama, dance, music tech etc...

I'm not sure if I like it, I certainly don't think it's a good fit for many 'traditional' BTEC students...

  3. I phoned Edexcel a couple of weeks ago and they told me current spec is still running and new one is planned for September 2013. Not sure if this is still the case but it might be worth giving them a ring as things seem to be changing pretty frequently...

I thought it said on the website that it was for first teaching this September... ( http://www.edexcel.com/quals/firsts2012/Pages/default.aspx )

Edexcel clearly don't know their brass from their oboe...
