Best Uni for Maths PGCE

Discussion in 'Trainee and student teachers' started by beedup, Jan 20, 2011.

  1. I am a student at the moment, on a yearlong Subject Knowledge Enhancement course, with conditional acceptance on to the Secondary Maths PGCE at my uni in September.
I am finding this year's course a complete shambles and am dreading next years PGCE. I am aware that it is a high workload course on a good day, but I think that my current uni will only make the experience worse. Our course coordinator has little or no contact with us, and communication is sparse and sporadic, and often incorrect. We find out about assignments and tasks later than would be expected, and the goal posts are often moved. They have a huge emphasis on ICT, but then don't make use of the university's VLE at all! The 2 courses that are run by university staff have been a complete waste of my time-I could have learnt more from 2 hours with Wikipedia. When we began observation placements 2 of my fellow students were not expected by their school at all. This went on for 3 weeks before the coordinator sorted it out! Basically they seem to be a badly organised bunch, and despite many pleas for better communication and instructions nothing has changed!
As a result, I am going to apply to other universities for my PGCE year- I'm not sure I can put up with another year of this! What I would like to know is whether anyone can recommend a particularly good secondary Maths programme?

I have posted this on the student forum, but thought I would direct the question to Maths specialists too.
    Many thanks,
    Brigid
