Assignment - Assessment or Attainment - Can I get your opinion please?

Discussion in 'Physical education' started by lkdunn, Apr 2, 2012.

  1. Hi, Im a GTP trainee, currently attempting an assignment surrounding the following title -
Too much attention has been paid to using assessment to compare school performance and not enough to using it to increase pupils' attainment. How valid is this statement in 2011/2012 within your subject specialism?
Before anyone starts having a go at me for asking people to do the assignment for me - I'm not!
I DO have my own views, and I HAVE researched, I am wading through books and journals as I type, but as a trainee - I feel I lack some of the experience necessary to make a sound judgement, and I am simply asking for others, experienced, opinion on this statement?
    Many thanks

  3. i would disagree with this statement. It sometimes seems to me that my raison d'etre is to keep on looking at Alis/Cat scores, assess my students via a half term test, compare the obtained with the predicted grades and put in the needed intervention!! We also have an enrichment programme where each teacher has to do an hour after school to run a club. These clubs can range from sport through to astronomy, most departments are using them for INTERVENTION! In my opinion I feel I am losing the process of education and simply concentrating on the product. This is even more fueled by the schools desire to stay outstanding from OFSTED

Interestingly the latest debate on Newsnight was covering the topic of giving Universities more control over the A Level exams. Lecturers are saying that students are not independent learners and have limited knowledge. I would echo a similar sentiment (although I dont support Gove's proposals!) we are constantly attempting to teach students who have been spoonfed through the GCSE process with the main aim of gaining their predicted rather than fostering a desire and hunger to investigate and research their subject. Dont get me wrong maintaining/increasing students attainment is important but personally that wasnt the only reason I came into teaching, it was the opportunity to develop the student as a whole and somehow I feel that is being lost under the cover of predicted/challenging targets. Rant over!!
