Aspergers in kindergarten ... advice on helping child socially and intervention

    Hello. I teach K1 in an international school. The children are 4, turning 5. I have one child who exhibits a large number of the symptoms of aspergers and although not officially diagnosed, we are fairly certain this is a fair assessment of the child. I am wondering how I can help him in his social development in class and also how effective intervention would be. I know he is very young, but from what I've read, early intervention is key. He shows little interest in socialising with his peers, (he seems to be in his own little world in class) although we have noticed more recently, he allows children to hold his hand sometimes.He's gone through some major changes recently in his home life such as moving country and having a new baby sister. Any ideas are most welcome! Thank you in advance :D

    What do the parents think?
    Could his social difficulties be due to these changes rather than ASD ... what was he like in any previos setting/home?

  3. Would agree with using social stories. I have got group 1 (Reception)in an International school and I have got a child that I am beginning to use them on.
    With this particular child we originally thought that she might be on the Autism spectrum as she was displaying many of the signs, we brought the parents in for a meetingand had a couple of observations of her with our SEN team and it turns out that she used to live in Hong Kong with her family and the babysitter had placed her in straps and put her in front of a television for over 8 hours every day with no socialision at all and she was unable to communicate with her parents becasue nobody ever spoke to her.
    My point with all of that is have a meeting with the parents because it can sometimes be suprising with what is going o and now that we know this we are able to now work on ways to help her
