I’m thinking about applying for an Art PGCE next year, so that gives me enough time to work on a portfolio (and save money!) What type of things do I need to include in the portfolio?

    Hi cw0
Try to get some time in a school - observing and volunteering where possible and keep any examples of work you do there (may be difficult if you work full time or if schools are reluctant). I would also suggest your portfolio contain examples of your work in the media you work in. When I applied I took along my portfolio which contained examples of work from my degree and foundation course as well as references from school teachers where I had done some "work experience".
The breadth of your skills will be an advantage.

As above is very sound advice. Photos of work done with students will help, and of them shown working and if possible of you working with them. Local authorities often run holiday clubs with an Art basis - but you probably will need to be checked out first for working with children.
Use examples of your own work and development that may be relevant, and be prepared to talk about it. Good luck
