are there any books that teach you how to be a HoD?

    Well done you - hope all goes well. Yes experience does matter and so does 'getting stuck in'.

    There is theory and then there is something more..doing the actual job.

    I believe experience is only worth what you learn from it.

    Some people can learn a lot very quickly and adapt and improve rapidly as a result of what it is they have experienced.

    Some people have been doing the job for donkeys and still make a total mess of it.

    I'd be rather surprised if there are many of these people left, they've been purged over a long period of time now. Not even satisfactory/good teachers who have been around for donkeys as you put it have survived, and with budget reductions due to increased overheads you can rest assured if one or two slipped through the net they won't last long.
