Are shirt pockets going out of fashion?

I have been surprised to discover that out of the six M&S shirts I've bought since November, only two had a pocket. What's going on? Where am I supposed to put my glasses when I'm not wearing them?

I have a gazillion lanyards - you could fashion a glasses chain thingy.

That plethora thread could have another use rather than just cathartic!

Lanyards are fine for women @Spiritwalkerness but possibly not so good for the menfolk. ;)

I did try using a lanyard when I first found I needed to use glasses. This will have been back in the days I had my engineering business and found I was struggling to read a micrometer. The trouble was the glasses kept getting caught on machine handles, so I got into the habit of slipping them in my shirt pocket.

There should be a British Standard specification for shirt designs that insists they have to have at least one pocket and harsh fines for any retailer that sells shirts with out them. I wouldn't mind so much if the intention was to keep prices low, but the cost of a shirt has gone through the roof as well.

I sympathise with you @Duke of York . Mr Marlin does not like to wear shirts without a breast pocket and, like you, I've really struggled to find him shirts with a pocket recently.

My Dad was complaining about this recently as well. It is obviously a very important problem.

On the subject of lanyards - they are another evil invention (rather like parma violets). They keep getting tangled up in stuff and dangle awkwardly.

Funnily enough, only this morning someone was telling me he'd broken an arm on his glasses when putting the seat belt on in his car, because they were, or had been until then, dangling round his neck.

Especially if you have two other lanyards with separate ID tags on them.

Pens aren't used as much as they used to be so there is no need for a pocket to keep them in.

There aren't as many smokers either so you don't need somewhere to keep your fags.

I hope it was the arm of his glasses and not his arm.

I don't think M&S can be regarded as being at the leading edge of men's fashion.

I expect there's some who keep a pen handy, if only to make notes on who the new posters once were.

What I don't understand in all this is why Duke bought 4 shirts without pockets if he knew he needed pockets. After all, he must have known where to get shirts with pockets if he bought 2 that had them.
