Archaeology

  1. I'm setting up a new Archaeology AS Level course. Does anyone else teach archaeology? Any advice and tips would be gratefully received. The Unit 1 specialism will be ancient Egypt.

  3. Warn them that the eventual career structure in Archaeology is very flat! Loads of minimum wage digging numbers, very few opportunities for advancement.

  4. While there may be a few wannabe Lara Crofts and Indian Jones amongst the students, I doubt if many are considering careers, or even degrees, in archaeology.

  5. We have taught a creative curriculum theme. based on archaeology and treasure. Obviously very different from AS level, but we have had the local council archaeology outreach team come in and work with the children. They were fabulous with the children, knowledgeable about appropriate tasks and subject area. I would suggest getting in touch with your local outreach team. ( PS with Gov. cuts our archaeological outreach will end at the end of October 2011- so sooner rather than later!)

Agreed. There's probably very little chance of them appearing on Time Team :)

  7. Thanks Charlotte. I'll have to investigate whether our council has an archaeological outreach team. I imagine if they do it will probably being going the same way as yours due to the financial situation. How much time did you spend per week or term or year on the archaeology and treasure theme?

  8. If you or anyone else would like the resources I developed while teaching A level Archaeology, I can provide them in the form of complete Moodle VLE pages for AS and A2. They contain all the student resource sheets I wrote over twelve years, web links and videos. If you would like copies, e-mail me at as.richardson@virgin.net.
