Anyone starting a PGCE at York St John looking for housemates?

Discussion in 'Primary' started by han94, Feb 23, 2011.

  1. Hi I've just found out that I got a place at York St John for Upper primary starting in September and I will be moving up to York from London. Just wondered if there was anyone else in the same position? Or if anyone could offer advice of how to go about finding somewhere to live in York!

Last year the university set up a Facebook group to help PGCE students looking to houseshare, there was information about this and househunting on the induction day in march.

  4. Thanks for the info! Unfortunately this year the induction day isn't until June, so I'm not sure if that would be leaving it too late?! I can't find a facebook group but hopefully one will be set up soon

  5. Hey Esther, no I've not managed to sort anything so just planning to wait for induction day in June then hopefully sort it then!

If you get stuck, have a look at spareroom.com or easyroommates.com. Always loads in York at about £50 to £75 a week. There's enough specialist rental companies for students as well. Best bet for college is The Groves area, Burtonstone lane area and Tang Hall / Layerthorpe. All about 5 to 15 mins walk away.Renting a 3 bed house is about £700 to £900 a month. There's not really any areas to avoid but parts of Acomb and Bell House farm area are a bit dodgy but nothing like a no go area.
College is also very handy for town. Like 2 mins walk away. It's a great college and also most York schools are really good to train in. Be warned though - get a job in a York school and you probably won't leave it.

  7. Hi Hana, I'm also coming up from London to York for the PGCE course and am looking for shared housing, glad to see there are others in the same boat! Was hoping that in June there would be some kind of meeting so everyone who is looking could meet! June definitely won't be too late to find somewhere though. Or maybe we could swap facebook details or something?? Hannah x
