Anyone getting nervy about results yet?

    Dreading Thursday. Results weren't brilliant last year, my neck is well and truly in the line if we have a repeat performance this year!

    Keeping everything crossed for the kids, and all of us!

    Don't let it ruin your Summer

    They sat the exams - you didn't.

    I'm quietly confident my results will be a little better than last year but what will be will be.

    True-but it seems teachers are held responsible for everything these days. After some time 'out of the game', on my first day in a new school, they spent hours doing 'data analysis'-basically explaining every single result that was even one grade from predicted. As I was new, clearly none were 'my' students, but I was given a list and asked to 'TRY to complete it'. I did suggest that perhaps children are not robots-some work harder than others, some might have had personal/home/medical issues and some might just have had a bad day, but they seemed to want responnses about what interventions should work so that all the data matched...

    I had a truly outstanding cohort this year (albeit a very small one) and they should do extremely well, but I am still a bit ( a lot) nervy!

    holding teachers responsible for everything and instilling a culture of blame and panic tends to just make for a very unhappy school.

    Sadly my school is just as Peakster describes. Dreading the 22nd.

    I also think there’s a culture of schadenfreude - this could easily be a misspelling- between departments. I suppose nobody wants to get the worst results as it leads to a miserable year.

    I don't think A level results will be good. The cohort was weak, many should not have been taking A level sciences .C or D grades would be a real achievement for some of them though target grades were A/B. One student had appalling attendance ( below 50% ) and was allowed to stay and sit exams:eek:. My colleagues and I have done our best and to be fair most of the students worked hard. If there is any fall out I am inclined to tell the head to find another A level teacher . Ooo good luck with that as we are already short staffed and unable to recruit.

    I remember one year sitting through the usual power-point presentation on our results. Three departments did so badly they were designated as A,B and C.

    Of course we all knew who A, B and C were.

    The head of departments A and B left shortly afterwards.

    I had a class once a few years ago (same school as the ABC thing above). Very bright class but we worked so hard for two years.

    The students got 28 A*s and an A

    Did anyone in management say thank you or well done ?

    How on earth did this become normalised? Kids sit the exams, not teachers.

    It's been like that for a while.

    It doesn't bother me so much now - I 'm getting close to retirement.

    Some years ago I worked at a school where HODS were given the full set of results for every pupil in the year. This was very helpful when analysing performance and particularly useful when my LM wanted to discuss department results.
    Obviously if a pupil had performed on or above target in every subject except mine it was fair and reasonable that I should have to explain why this had happened. If a pupil had performed poorly in all or most of their subjects, a common problem at that time in that particular school, while this did not necessarily let us of the hook, it was obvious that any solutions would need to take into account issues that were probably beyond the control of the individual teacher or HOD. e.g. the pupils attendance, behaviour, Just not giving a you know what.
    This sharing of results info was then stopped, reason given, off record, was that school SLT were not interested in excuses and expected all departments to achieve targets regardless of any factors that might effect pupil progress and achievement.

    I'm particularly nervy this year - I've taught 3 subjects to A Level, despite only being a specialist in one of them. Even if 2 of the subjects are ok, I know I will still get a grilling about the third subject. And that i optimistic. Realistically all 3 subject areas could go badly. Despite the BTEC results, vocational Level 2 and (fingers crossed) the GCSE results being good, this will probably ruin my September and I will be made to feel useless.

    I’m extremely nervous.

    This year group had a lot of cover throughout key stage 3, and despite being (on the whole!) lovely, hardworking children, I am not convinced that they will have made up for lost time.

    I am worried both for them, and for the hard time that we will get as a department for poor results.

    I am nervous for those kids as an A Level and GCSE teacher. I hope they do well, I hope they get the apprenticeship and UCAS acceptance and none go to clearing.

    I will be questioned if their results overall are below the extraordinary targets assigned, I will not be thanked or praised if they do better than expected.

    So I am nervous for the students. Not for me. They aren't my results. They are theirs. I did my best to help them get there. Therefore I rest my head and enjoy the rest of my summer.

    Dreading it, though hoping for the best for the students. I'm pretty certain I posted similar around this time last year but last summer's results days were pretty horrendous for me. I don't want to say too much for obvious reasons but being grilled at length by senior management on results' days themselves was not pleasant at all.

    It's funny because so many schools claim they're about so much more than exam results, yet you wouldn't believe it come the days of the results (and fall-out from them).

    I think we are all hoping for an improvement in our results this year and I think we'll get a "bounce" - our new SLT (and us) have worked very hard over the last year and we deserve a break. If we don't get it then next year might be a bit difficult.

    But here's the thing - one factor we are up against at our place is after years of the kids and their parents running the school - there is a poor work ethic amongst the kids. This is slowly improving but it's going to be an uphill struggle.

    There is also a lack of aspiration - bright kids who do nothing at school because "Mum and Dad will give me a job" or they pick something that will allow them to not stretch themselves in any way. Also these new GCSEs are garbage - one size does not fit all. There used to be good courses for the lower ability students but they have been abolished. I cannot think of a SINGLE positive thing that the various Tory governments we have had for so long have done to help either teachers or students. Free schools have been a total disaster, academy chains - don't get me started (yes I know academies were started under Labour) but some of those places are hell to work in.

    Piling on the pressure at all levels has decimated the teaching profession. A young Primary school teacher in a school near me committed suicide a couple of years ago the night before the KS2 SATS results came out because she couldn't handle her anxiety. Many teachers will be worried about their futures next week - it doesn't seem to matter how hard you work - it is always going to be your fault if your classes do not achieve. The situation has got ridiculous - I know of one middle leader who no longer teaches exam classes simply because they do not want the blame. One thing that has (sadly) almost gone is the ability to feel a sense of enjoyment when something goes right. One of the biggest achievements of my entire teaching career was helping to get one of my Year 11 students a grade C because she desperately wanted to do a Vet Nurses course at college. She could never quite get a C in exams but we worked on it - did some good coursework and she made it (I still have the bruises from the hug she gave me on results day - and that was 10 years ago). These days - she'd be forecast a B (or whatever number it is now - I hate them too) and snarky emails would follow.

    Anyway - I'm off on holiday tomorrow morning. I'll be back on results day and will be in bright and early to see what happens.



    But of course we know there is no teacher retention and recruitment process. We know this because we cannot find applicants for virtually any teaching position at our school and my previous department is so well staffed they had 5 long term supply teachers in at one point. I had a look at my local area teacher recruitment site the other day - it's the middle of Summer - there are over 50 unfilled teaching positions on there. I still get requests from the supply agency I worked for five years ago.
