Another Chemistry question ... thanks in advance

  1. Hi RF ... I guess you are helping someone with Chemistry GCSE, rather than teaching it (and I think the question you have raised relates to a past AQA C3 paper)

    Yes, the idea of an acid being a proton donor is relevant here ... the AQA chemistry specification includes the following: ™
    "An acid can be defined as a proton donor. A base can be defined as a proton acceptor.
    ? Water must normally be present for a substance to act as an acid or as a base.
    ? Acids produce hydrogen ions in aqueous solution. The H+ ion is a proton. In water this proton is hydrated and is represented as H+(aq).
    ? Alkalis produce hydroxide ions, OH?(aq), in aqueous solutions."

    It's worth looking at the relevant specification ... the next idea for AQA is the concept of strong and weak acids and alkalis - reflecting their degree of ionisation in water

    As you suggest she is working on AQA C3

  3. (Hope I wasn't too blunt .... I've seen you often enough in Maths to know where your specialisms are ... I think
    - also protecting you from the smart alecs who express despair whenever people admit to teaching something they aren't already expert at .....
    .... happens in Maths too, I believe!)
